Controlling the Gmail inbox without entering

gmail unread count

My friend Sameer came this morning to show us something new that does not pose a technological milestone, I found most interesting: display the number of new messages in Gmail inbox in your own favicon .

The truth is that this detail is very good looking, individually I find interesting and especially useful for those who walk in a sea of tabs open (of which Gmail is), because using it, and practically, giving a look at the row of tabs, we can verify if we have received new messages.

In the event that we did not have this feature available, or directly, we worked, we can keep track of mail received in our inbox, for example, complementing our browser or email our manager with any extension that emulates this behavior or you add some more details.

For example, in Firefox you can find some extensions that allow us to control our Gmail mailbox in a very discreet and, above all, without the need to keep open Gmail tab (which, unfortunately, in some work environments are not very well seen):

  • We can emulate this feature in Firefox using the extensions Gmail Labs Gmail Notifier Favicon or Unread Gmail Favicon that precisely change the favicon in your browser and add the number of unread emails you have in your inbox.
  • Gmail Notifier also shows the number of unread messages you have, though, instead of on the favicon is displayed as an icon in the lower right corner of the Firefox window.Furthermore, when entering a new message, we will show the subject and a brief summary of the message content.
  • If we manage several web email accounts, for example, Gmail and Hotmail to time, with Webmail notifier may focus on a single icon all messages that have to read and also receive notices of new people arrive.

If, however, you use Chrome, also available some extensions with which we can be aware of what is coming to our mailbox:

  • Gmail Checker is an extension that I use and shows through an icon in the upper right corner of the window, the number of messages to read that are in the inbox. Simply push, it will open a new tab with your inbox.
  • Gmail Notifier would be another option, in fact, practically the same as above but adds the ability to display a small summary of the message sender, subject, and a brief introduction to the content.
  • Simple Gmail Checker also allows displaying the number of messages, set up multiple Gmail accounts (or Google Apps).
  • But if we want to be the favicon you notify us with unread Gmail favicon counter orwith Gmail Favicon Notifications can do it, whether having only the message counter reading or further notification when adding any new messages arrive .

Anyway, all these extensions and the ability to activate an option in Gmail Labs itself, I think we ran out of excuses to not be aware of the messages that we receive . I probably let some extent by the way, so if you use any other extension you know any interesting or we can add to the list, let me know through comments.
