Apple and Google – Path To Innovation Is Very Different But Closing In Gaps

apple-vs-googleDifferent companies have got different strategies to expand their business empire. A company cannot survive in its industry without making key innovations and products. New ideas and products will propel the sales and it is mandatory for the company to face the yin and yang of the innovation. Google and Apple are considered to be the World’s epicenter for innovation and branding.

Google Model:

Google always considers its end users while making great product designs. It refines the search lists and search criteria based on the user data. It keeps track of the user activities such as advertising market place, search, email services etc and uses a bottom up approach.

Apple Model:

Apple follows an intuitive and top-down approach. There is nothing called market research in this company and Steve Jobs had a clear answer:”NO”. Apple has got a varied list of products in its top line. Product designs are mostly restricted to the R&D labs of the company.

What Google Does?

Google tries to take advantage of data driven decision making process. The online experimentation can take place at a lower cost. The new techniques and procedures can be instantly tested extensively with the user patterns online. There are no limits prescribed or denominated in this data driven approach.

What Apple Does?

Apple follows the concept of open innovation which it assumes will be accepted by its end users. It is a rare blend of certainty and openness to the new world of technology. Most of its products have got a short life span mostly not beyond than 3 or 4 years. Unlike Google, Apple is in hardware business too! This will be a bottleneck for Apple as their R&D is restricted to the limits of material science and manufacturing of elements.

What Makes The Difference?

The physical world for Apple and Google is so different. Google is pushing its product line up in the realm of internet which will require few lines of code changes. The product can be instantly tested. However, Apple requires a careful melding of hardware and its software to be tested in multi-disciplinary environment. The top leaders in Apple team were handpicked by Jobs who are tirelessly working in information gathering network on subjects spanning across technologies.

In Brief:

Google and Apple pursue different methods and paths to innovation. However, the gap is getting narrow and will be closing a bit in the near future. It is up to the CEOs of these companies to choose a different path and keep the momentum going. Both the companies have been shutting down products that were not doing well in the market. Despite the results and market share, both these companies have got important lessons to be learnt from each other. People have started expecting a lot from these technology giants. They will be in the business as long as they deliver quality results. Apple is performing extra-ordinarily well when compared to Google in terms of sales numbers, profits and other number crunching measures in this digital world.
